Near the villages of Kalambaka and Kastraki one of the weirdest Greek landscapes attracts visitors from all over the world. From the plain of the river Peneios, rock formations rise more or less perpendicular to a height of up to 300 m. Once mighty rivers from the nearby Pindos mountain range eroded this mass of rocks, forming a stone forest with isolated pinnacles and deep ravines in a setting of unearthly beauty. In all times, these almost inaccessible rocks were a place of refuge for the people of the area. The first hermits settled here in caves around AD 950. In the turbulent times of the 14th century, the first monastery - no longer preserved - was founded on the Doupiani rock, and shortly afterwards the rock monastery of "Megalon Meteoron", still existing today. |

Staying in "Zozas Rooms" in Kastraki, the view from the window (above) or from the terrace (below) is absolutely breathtaking. |
