Above: On Mytikas ridge with a view to the Saronic Gulf. In September 2023 I was looking there for section 'Ro' of the 'Cyclopean Wall'. At the top of the slope I did find an ancient wall (pictures below) but it seems to be part of the Hexamilion. Both walls had nearly the same course in this area and it took a long time to convince me that here is really a part of the Hexamilion, although its construction differs distinctly from all the other parts that I know. |

This part of the wall consists of large, more or less square stone blocks, clearly not Cyclopean,but by far not as neatly cut and smooth as the ashlar blocks I am used from other parts of the Hexamilion. Since the blocks don't fit precisely together the interstices are filled with irregular smaller stones. The blocks are laid out in more or less regular courses and, quite remarkable, in some places mortar can be seen. |
