Fountain of Glauke

Near the entrance to the site is the fountain house of Glauke. According to mythology Glauke was a daughter of king Kreon of Corinth. Medea, expelled by her husband Jason for Glauke's sake, burned her with her magic power by means of a spellbound dress. - Inside the building, which is mostly pure rock, (inaccessible) steps lead down to the place where water could be scooped that came from a water pipe.

On a low, isolated hill and set on four high steps is the temple of Apollo (above left: seen from Glauke's fountain). Erected in 550 - 525 BC it is the landmark of Corinth and the oldest preserved temple of the Doric order - which the Corinthians perhaps justly claimed to have invented.

The present temple of Apollon was erected on the place of an even older temple of the 7th century BC. The new temple had pronaos and opisthodomos. Of the surrounding originally 38 monolithic columns (6 x 15) without entasis, seven are still standing. With their height of 7.30 m and a diameter of 1.80 m at the base they appear heavy, almost clumsy, comparable to those of the slightly older temple of Hera at Olympia. This impression is even strengthened by the flatness of the columns' conspicuously broad capitals.
