GREECE PELOPONNESE ELEIA OLYMPIA MUSEUM

One of the main attractions is the central hall, the length of which corresponds to the front sides of the temple of Zeus, where the famous sculptural decoration of the two pediments are beautifully set in scene. The preserved fragments of Parian marble are good examples of the "severe style" and are dated to 470-456 BC.

The more than life-size figures of the East pediment depict the legendary chariot race between Pelops and Oinomaos with Zeus himself as the central figure.

Above: Oinomaos, Zeus, Pelops, Hippodameia (from left to right). - Below: King Oinomaos - thoughtful, gloomy, worried. He anticipates the disaster to come. The myth of this chariot race tells about the works of the Gods and the misfortune that cannot be averted. It is the early time of Classical Greek tragedy.

Below: Hippodameia, Oinomaos' daughter, stands on the right side, next to Pelops, the naked youthful hero. The victory and the promising future of a new generation has been foretold.
