Above left: Coming from the modern entry to the altis, the first architectural remains to be seen are those of the gymnasium (ca. 220 x 120 m). It was a closed rectangular building of the second century BC with stoa and a large yard, where the athletes practised. - Above right and below: The Palaestra, erected in the third century BC, is a square building (66 x 66 m) used for the practice of wrestling, boxing and jumping. The central open court is surrounded by a Doric collonade. Behind the collonade were rooms of various sizes, entered through Ionic porches.
