West of Lefkakia lies the little church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos. What makes this church so special is that it was built inside the fundaments of an ancient building. The polygonal stonework is exactly the same as in the "Pyramid" in Hellenikon of the 4th century BC. Therefore, it is assumed that this building was some sort of "watch tower" forming part of the same communication system as those of Hellenikon and Ligourio.

Below: The church probably comes from the Ottoman period with some darkened frescoes of the 18th century. A peculiarity is a wooden ladder leading up to a small opening, and stairs leading down outside. This is said to heal sick children and/or help so-called barren wives to get pregnant - if they climb up the ladder, through the window and down the stairs.

Ancient temple

Without the famous little brown signs you would probably never notice it - the limestone foundations of an ancient temple next to the Church of the Presentation of Christ. The temple is dated to the Archaic period and was probably dedicated to Apollo. It was excavated at the end of the 20th century, but this only brought to light some inconspicious remains that will leave the average visitor quite disappointed.
