Above left: "M. FULVIO / HEROPHILO MEDICO / OCLARIO / ARESCUSALIB / D.S.P." - "To Marcus Fulvius / Herophilus ophthalomogist / Arecusa his freedwoman / (dedicated this gravestone) / at her own expense". - Marcus Fulvius Herophilus was a Greek ophthamologist. The inscription confirms that there was a tradition of medicine in Patras and the city's contribution to medical science during the Roman Period. - Patras, 1st century AD. Above right: Marble sundial, the metal gnomon of which is missing. In the lower part of the base an inscription in Latin is just visible. The sundial was found built into the wall of a luxury Roman villa at Psila Alonia square, Patras. Dated to the 1st century AD. |
