view to Sitia

The area of modern Sitia (above left: seen from Trypetos) was already habitated in Minoan times. Architectural remains of this time and later periods are found in various parts of the town, but most of them are covered by modern buildings. Especially worthwhile is a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Sitia. This small museum houses in its modern exhibition halls important archaeological finds from eastern Crete (see map below left), especially various Minoan clay sarcophagi. - Below right: hieroglyphic and Linear A inscriptions from Petras.
