Kavousi, a nice little town on the north coast of Crete near the Gulf of Mirambello, is a good starting point to visit a number of sites in the area: in the mountains south of Kavousi are the archaeological sites of Azoria, Kastro and Vronda, where Harriet Boyd (later Boyd-Hawes) made first excavations, before she concentrated on the excavation of Gournia. The map gives an overview of the locations. Not contained in this map are the nearby sites of Tholos (with the remains of a Roman storehouse), and Chrysokamino (ancient copper smelting site).

Above: In the hills behind Kavousi is a very impressive ancient olive tree, probably the oldest on Crete and perhaps of all Greece. It is said to be 3250 years old which means that it was planted near the end of the Minoan period. Its height is some 7 m, the circumference of its crown is 34 m and the trunk's circumference is uncredible 14.2 m.
