We now come to the absolute highlight of the museum: panels of glass mosaics in the "opus sectile" technique. They were found in the so-called Temple of Isis in Kenchreai and most likely originated from an Alexandrian workshop. They date to the 4th century AD, the period immediately before the earthquake of 375 AD that led to their burial and subsequent preservation. - The panels belong to three categories: a) pictorial (architectural marine or litteral panoramas), b) hieratic (life size figures), c) decorative (geometric floral and architectural motifs). |
