At the northern end of the isthmus, West of the canal, are remains of the ancient diolkos. Clearly to be seen is the ancient pavement of square poros blocks and in some places two grooves at a distance of 1.50 m. Boats, mostly warships, were put on some sort of vehicles with wheels and then dragged to the other side of the isthmus. Various sources confirm that this practice continued up to the 9th century AD. - Shown here is the diolkos Southeast of the modern road. This short part of the preserved diolkos ends where it intersects the modern canal. |

Above left and below: The northwestern end of the diolkos is collapsing due to erosion caused by the maritime traffic in the canal. A petition to restore and conserve this archaeological monument had no success so far. |
