Excavations at Tiryns were resumed in 1905-1920, when the German Archaeological Institute excavated on the acropolis and in the city outside the walls. The chance find of a secret cistern in 1962 encouraged further research especially in the Lower Citadel, started by the German Archaeological Institute in 1967.

At the same time (late LH IIIB) as in Mycenae, two vaulted underground passages were built in Tiryns, leading to springs outside the citadel. Apparently, this was a time when exceptional security measures appeared necessary against the threat by a non-Mycenaean enemy.
