The fortress with impressive fortification walls was built by French engineers during the second Venetian occupation (1686-1715). It consists of eight bastions, each one the size of a fortress, surrounded by mighty walls. Since 1715 it was controlled by the Turks, and in 1822 liberated in the Greek War of Independence.
