Tomb of Klytaimnestra

location of Tomb of Klytaimnestra Tomb of Klytaimnestra

The very long (65 m) dromos of the "Tomb of Klytaimnestra" leads to a doorway with relief triangle, where you still see how the decorational relief sculpture was supported. First excavated by Sophia Schliemann in 1876, this tholos complies with all criteria of Group III. Except for the side chamber (missing here), the interior is comparable to that of the "Treasury of Atreus". Its architectural refinement places it at ca. 1200 BC, being one of the latest tholos tombs in Mycenae.

Above the dromos are several rows of stone seats of a small Hellenistic theatre. Obviously, the tholos was completely covered by earth already in the 3rd century BC, its existence forgotten.
