According to legend Kiveri was founded around 1600 BC by some of the first Dorian invaders of the Peloponnese. More specifically, mythology tells us that Danaos, founder of the city of Argos, had anchored at the small port town of Kiveri. - These stories have now, no later than 2001, found an archaeological basis through the excavation of a Mycenaean cemetery right in the village behind the church. But even now, more than 20 years after its discovery, the site is not signposted and without a hint by our landlady I would probably not have found it. |

Above: My sketch plan of the Mycenaean cemetery and a photo mosaic of the nine chamber tombs in Kiveri. - Most of the tombs are well preserved with dromos, stomion and tomb chamber (for an introduction to Mycenaean burial structures: see here). They are freely accessible, quite neglected, some polluted with garbage. |
