sign to Mycenaean bridges Mycenaean highway 1

About midway from Nauplion to the sanctuary of Epidaurus at Ligourio, just before reaching Kazarma, one of the famous brown signs points to Mycenaean bridges. - After a short walk you arrive at the first of the Mycenaean bridges in this region. It is part of the Mycenaean "Highway 1" which can still be seen in places. This ancient highway linked Mycenae, Tiryns and Epidaurus and is actually part of a whole network of Mycenaean highways that have been discovered with bridges on several places. It was the main road from the Argolid plain to the Saronic Gulf, built for the passage of chariots.

The "Petrogefiri bridge" is definitely Mycenaean (about 1300 BC), but so well preserved that this has been questioned occasionally. It consists of large limestone boulders, built in the Mycenaean masonry similar to the "Cyclopean" walls e.g. in Mycenae and in Tiryns. From these places, also the same type of arch is known in the underground passages.

A little bit further in the direction of Ligourio, only about 50 m north of the modern road and clearly visible from there lies the better known "Arkadiko bridge" (dimensions: 22 x 5.60 x 4 m). Like the "Petrogefiri bridge", it is dated to ca. 1300 BC and surprisingly well preserved.
