Driving east past Iria, just after passing Karnezéika, there are signs to a canyon and "Monastery Avgou" (but why are there "visiting hours" in a monastery that, according to my information, has long been abandoned?). At this point starts a rugged dirt road that takes you within half an hour to the monastery. Before you arrive there, at the lowest spot, you will pass a river, usually dry in summertime. The road passes a beautiful canyon landscape and you may also see a mantis (Mantis religiosa). |

Even from far away, before crossing the river, you can see the monastery of Avgou, Moni Avgou or Agios Dimitrios monastery, clinging to the steep rocks - provided you know where to look for it. Then the road steeply climbs up the other side of the canyon before it reaches a plateau where a sign indicates that you reached your destination. But nothing can be seen of the monastery from here. After descending for some 100 m on a footpath there are spectacular views up to the sea in the West with an overview of the dirt track on which you came. |
