GREECE EPIRUS THESPROTIA GITANA

The city of Gitana is crossed by a polygonal partition wall with gates. This additional fortification encloses an area where inhabitance perhaps continued after the Roman destruction until the end of the second period of operation of the Koinon of the Epirotes (167-27 BC).

The Prytaneion, i.e. the building for meetings and dinners of Gitana's government, is situated in the SW edge of the settlement, its 1,500 square metres covering an entire construction insula of the Hippodamian grid. The building also served as the city's archives. - Two rooms were decorated with mosaic floors covering the entire surface. One shows a frame with a spiral pattern and dolphins in the corners. The other has a frame with helices surrounding the picture of a star within a circle.

In one of the rooms in the Prytaneion, the archives, more than 3,000 clay sealings were found. - Next to this room is a storage area with several large pithoi partly preserved.
