The oracle and sanctuary was set on fire by the Romans in 167 BC when they destroyed 70 cities in Epirus and took away 150,000 prisoners.

Below: Underneath the central room lies an underground chamber with poros arches. It owes its existence perhaps to a cave of the prehellenic cult of Persephone (2nd millenium BC).

Acheron, in Greek mythology the river of woe and one of the five rivers of the underworld across which Charon ferries the newly-dead to enter the kingdom of Hades, is watered by springs in the Tomaros mountains. After a length of 58 km it flows into the Thesprotian Gulf at Ammoudia near the Nekromanteion.

Near Glyki, the Acheron issues from a deep gorge that justly attracts many visitors. Especially in summer, activities like canoeing rafting and horse-riding are offered. Probably the best way to visit the gorge is however by foot.

Coming from the direction of Parga, drive to Glyki, turn right at the junction, cross the bridge and turn immediately left. Park at the recommendable Piges Acheronta (Acheron's Springs) taverna at the banks of the Acheron from where a signed foot-path starts at the south side of the river or right hand side when viewed from the taverna. After a walk of about one hour you reach a viewpoint near the top of the gorge. From there the path leads down to the river. Although the water is really cold it is quite adventurous and an unforgettable experience to wade your way back through the river. Depending on the season and rainfall the water level varies but there are places where you will have to swim even in summer.
