Xerokampos is a small coastal settlement in the southeast of Crete, already recorded in the 1583 Venetian census. The village is 20 km away from Ziros in a quite remote area of really stunning natural beauty. Coming from the mountain plain around Ziros, an absolutely spectacular roads winds through the mountains and down to the southeast coast

The little whitewashed chapel of Agios Nikolaos (photo above right) is the landmark of the archaeological site of Xerokampos: On Farmakofefalo, a low hillock right by the sea, an important town, mainly of the Hellenistic period (4th-1st century BC), has been excavated under the direction of N. Papadakis since 1984. Low walls are still standing, numerous sherds lying around.
