Above left: Parts of the East pediment and of the famous frieze from the Siphnian Treasury, about 525 BC. The pediment (on top) shows the dispute between Apollo and Herakles over the Delphic tripod with Zeus as mediator. The East Frieze (below) depicts the assembly of gods during the Trojan War with supporters of Troy to the left of Zeus, of Greece to the right, as heroes fight over the body of Patroklos. - Above right: Detail of the Eastern Frieze from the Siphnian Treasury, a superb rhythmic composition of seated goddesses. - Below: Details of the well-preserved North Frieze of the Siphnian treasury with scenes from the Gigantomachy, the battle between gods and giants. It is a great specimen of the mature Archaic art. |
