Above left: Near the House of Mosaics is the "Industrial Quarter" of ancient Eretria, of which only few remains can be seen today. The picture shows foundations bordering the east-west artery of the ancient city. This street was 7 to 8 m wide in the Roman period and led to the theatre. Above right: Next to the ancient "Industrial Quarter" and at the intersection of two important ancient streets lies the "Sebasteion", a temple for the veneration the Roman emperors. It was probably constructed around 20 BC, as a mark of the Eretrians' gratitude towards the Emperor Augustus, who set them free from Athens' rule. The monument, which made use of an earlier Hellenistic temple of the 3rd century BC, is composed of two parts: a vestibule (on the picture in front) and a main room. Against the north wall, a series of carefully dressed grey limestone blocks form a podium (on the picture at the rear). |

Above left: Next to the House of Mosaics lie the thermae. During my visit in 2016 everything was covered with plastic sheets for protection. Perhaps there are ongoing excavations or the remains in this area are being consolidated. - Above right and below: near the harbour are the remains of Roman baths. |
