From Galatas there are frequent public and private boats to the nearby island of Poros. The city of Poros is quite touristic and as you walk along the busy waterfront with plenty of shops and cafés you can easily miss the small but interesting Archaeological Museum.

Above: Plaster cast of the famous "stele of Troizen" with the decree of 480 BC by Themistocles, ordering the evacuation of Athens during the second Persian invasion with women and children to be brought to Troizen, and summoning the fleet while granting amnesty to Athenians in exile. The text of this stele was actually written later, in the late 4th or early 3rd century BC. - A farmer discovered the slab in a field and used it as a doorstep for several years until 1959 when it was included in an exhibition at the village cafe of Troizen at which point its significance was recognised.
Left: Limestone slab with the relief representation of a dog, part of an ancient monument. |
