Above: Large amphora of the Geometric period. - Below left: Geometric amphora, a work of the "Dipylon painter", dated to the middle of the 8th century BC. In the height of the handles is a scene depicting the laying out of the deceased on a couch. The vase was used as a funerary monument at Kerameikos, the ancient graveyard in Athens. - Below right: The "Nessos Amphora", depicting Herakles killing the centaur Nessos (neck of the vase) and the three Gorgons (below). The black-figure style vase is the most characteristic work of the "Nessos painter" and was dated to ca. 620 BC. |
