Walking past the theatre to the lower area of the site we come to the large building complex of the Roman baths. Well, it is one of the decadent constructions of the Roman era that I don't esteem very much, but on the other side it is much better preserved than the rest of the site in Isthmia and there is much to see. The plan below left shows the reception room (VI), the cold baths (frigidaria, III-V), the warm room ( tepidarium X, serving as a heat-lock), and the hot rooms (caldaria, XI, XIII). - Most impressive are the caldaria with their elaborate construction for heating the floor. Hypocausts made of piers of stacked clay disks, originally 1.5 m high, were covered with mortar, large square tiles, and nicely cut marble slabs, forming the floor of these rooms. |

We now come to the central reception room of the Roman baths with a very large mosaic of black and white stones on the floor, depicting geometric and marine motifs. |
