Above: Looking West from the acropolis and a view of the temple of Demeter. - Already during the first excavations by Wilhelm Dörpfeld in 1891, the Doric peripteral temple of Demeter and an altar associated with it were discovered. The temple was erected in the first half of the 4th century BC and had 11 columns on the long side and 6 columns on the shorter side. Its fundaments can still be seen as well as some of its architectural parts lying near it (photos below).

Above and below: After Dörpfeld's investigation, excavations were resumed by Knell in 1978. More systematic work was conducting in 2002-2003 by the 7th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. This revealed remarkable remains also in the lower parts of the city.
