Ancient Epitalio (Epitalion), a city mentioned by Xenophon, was founded in the 5th century BC. It lies on the western slopes of the Agiorgitika hills, on the summit of which was the Homeric city of Thryon (Thryoessa), where remains of a prehistoric settlement have been found. Epitalio was the base of operations of Agis of Sparta (401 BC) and of Philip V of Macedonia (218 BC). As the limited excavations of 1967-68 showed, Epitalio was inhabited until late antiquity. The foundations of Roman baths with subterranean boiler, a pottery kiln and part of a Roman necropolis have been brought to light. Most of the Roman buildings of the 2nd to 4th century AD appear to lie above Hellenistic buildings. |
