On the summit of the hill is the so-called Upper Citadel, where first excavations were carried out by Heinrich Schliemann in 1876, which were then continued by him and Wilhelm Dörpfeld in 1884-85. Here, fundaments of the ruler's palace with anterooms, a large megaron, another smaller megaron, a bathroom with monolithic floor, courts, workshops and other rooms can be seen. - Below: The red limestone step leading to the propylon of the palace and a view from there to the main gate.

Above right: The inner court with a round altar. - Below: Bases of wooden columns of the inner court. However, the few scanty remains of walls make it hard to figure out the plan of the Upper Citadel.
