Above and below: Terracotta votive shields, Tiryns, Upper Citadel, early 7th century BC. The terracotta votive shields are the most impressive finds of the "bothros", the votive deposit on the Upper Citadel of Tiryns, the content of which has been connected to the worship of Hera. The shields were possibly hung in a sacred place or used for the performance of rituals. The unique painted representations of the shields in which a tall warrior is slaying a skirted Amazon possibly depicts an episode from the Aethiopis, in which Achilles is killing Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons. |
