Above: The Venetian Land Gate, built in 1708, was the only entrance to the city by land. In front of the gate was a moat, crossed by a wooden drawbridge. On top of the gate is a demolished Venetian lion and on the left a plaque commemorating the "liberation" of the city from the Turks by Francesco Morosini in 1687. Below: The spacious Platia Sintagmatos (Constitution Square), the central platia of the Old Town of Nafplion, where the Archaeological Museum is located as well as numerous cafés and some restaurants. |

Above: The ubiquitous Venetian Lion, also on the Platia Sintagmatos, and a fountain with arabic inscription. Strolling through the narrow streets of this part of Nafplion you can find gems like this in many places. |
