Chania of Monastiraki Chania of Monastiraki

West of Monastiraki lies the little known and quite neglected looking archaeological site of Chania under a precarious, low construction of wood and corrugated iron. Some of the iron sheets are gone and the whole roof clatters dangerously in the wind. Behind the inofficial entrance are chairs, indicating past meetings of local farmers at a wind-protected fireplace, perhaps having a barbecue there.

Chania was a multiroom Mycenaean farmhouse, situated 3 km south-west of the acropolis of Mycenae at one of the Mycenaean "highways" and destroyed by fire at the end of LH IIIC in the advanced 13th century BC. The originally two-storeyed building consisted of an open roofed courtyard, a main room, two store-rooms, a central corridor, a stairwell and a ramp to the upper floor. The architecture follows the design of a palatial centre but lacks all evidence for other displays of prestige or status.
