Midea is not on the programme of the average tourist, but next to Mycenae and Tiryns it is one of the major Mycenaean centers of the Argolis. Situated on a hill 270m above sea level, it is the highest place of a Mycenaean acropolis. Its importance may be deduced from the impressive fortifications, its role in mythology, its rich cemetery of neighboring Dendra, and from the findings of the excavations that started in 1939 and that were continued in the last 20 years. |

The Cyclopean walls of Midea have a length of 450m, a thickness of 5 to 7m, and on some places reach a remaining height of 7m. "A maze of walls has been excavated on the lower terraces of the citadel area of Midea. The walls were built in the prime of the Mycenaean period - the 13th century BC". One of the structures has been identified as "megaron", its appearance quite similar to the one at Tiryns. |
