Temple of Isis

Isis temple Argos Isis temple Argos plan

The ancient temple of Isis is one of the monuments not mentioned in any tourist guide book. Even an online search does not produce useful results.

The scarce architectural remains, probably of the Roman period, lie in a neglected plot next to Mpousoulopoulou street adjoining a modern house which is partly built over fundaments of the sanctuary. The existence of a temple of isis in Argos reflects the trade with Egypt in Hellenistic and Roman times. - Isis is a Egyptian goddess associated with life after death who brought her husband Osiris back to life and gave birth to their son Horus.

Hellenistic Gallery

Argos Hellenistic gallery Argos Hellenistic gallery

The architectural remains in this excavated area in modern Argos show in an upper level an oblong building, which was founded in the early Byzantine period (4th century AD). In a deeper level, parts of paved streets of the late Roman period (3rd century AD) were found as well as the porous foundation of buildings of Hellenistic times, constituting a gallery in the wider area of the ancient market, hardly 150 m away.

Early Christian Basilica

At the "Messinias Arkadia" road are the remains of an Early Christian basilica amid modern buildings. Traditionally, the Apostle Andrew is held to be the founder of christianity in Argos but I do not have information about this specific church.
