The castle of Larissa was named after the homonymous hill that rises 287 m above the modern city of Argos. There are remains of the prehistoric period and Mycenaean fortifications of the 13th century BC. It then shared the checkered history of Greece with Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish domination. The present form of the castle was established in the Middle Ages with the outer fortification wall being essentially Frankish, but actually the castle was in use until World War II. |
