GREECE PELOPONNESE ARGOLIS ARGOS TOWN

plan of ancient Argos

Argos is the oldest European city with continous habitation from the Neolithic until today. Parts of modern Argos actually sit on top of the ancient city.

The first settlement from Neolithic to Mycenaean times was at the location of the Larissa. Argos then had its heyday in the Archaic period when it dominated practically all of the Peloponnese regarding economics, politics and art. In the 5th century BC Argos, like other cities at that time, became a democratic polis. Its hegemony was finally lost in the late-Classical period to Sparta, its long-lasting rival.

Above and below: A nice custom - after visiting Argos we enjoy our favourite seaside fish taverna in Nea Kios.
