The picturesque village of Karytaina, high above the gorge of the Alpheios, is towered by the mighty Frankish castle built in 1245 by Hugues De Bruyere. In 1320 it was given to Andronicos Palaeologos, and later changed hands several times: occupied by the Venetians, then the Turks (1460-1685), again the Venetians (1685-1715), and the Turks (1715-1821) until its liberation by the Greeks.

Theodoros Kolokotronis, the famous warrior of the Greek Revolution, who was born in Karytaina, used it as his headquarters during his fight against Ibrahim Pasha.
