Etia, today a small village, reached its highest importance during the Venetian occupation. From this time, the 15th century, remain parts of a grand Venetian villa - one of the most important (and rare) examples of Venetian architecture on Crete. Built by a member of Venice's De Mezzo family, it later housed high officials during the Turkish occupation.

It was devastated during the Cretan revolution in 1897 and then fell into ruins. Meanwhile the remains have been reconstructed by the Greek authorities.
