In the area of Lefkandi several cemeteries of the Middle Helladic to the Geometric period (i.e. 2000-700 BC) have been excavated. - But what remains of these cemeteries? One is very probably located on the low hill indicated on the photo. On the site nothing remains, no indication of any graves. Just grass and reeds. |

The most important ancient building of Lefkandi is the "heroon". Sadly enough, it is not easy to find; in spite of its uniqueness and eminent importance, there are no signs leading to it. And in case you find it: the site, surrounded by modern houses, is fenced and there really is not very much to see from outside. The heroon is an oblong apsidal building of impressive dimensions (47 x 10 m), erected in the first half of the 10th century BC. In the floor of the building the burials of a woman, four horses and the cremation of a man were discovered. The building was presumably the residence of the royal ruler, after his death covered by a mound of earth (tumulus). Below right: Of the Geometric cemetery next to the heroon nothing is left. |
