As you enter Methana, the main city of the peninsula, you will first notice the smell of rotten eggs as you pass the open-air baths of the Thermal Spa. The typical pale-blue water contains a chemical combination of odourless methane (as Methana gave its name to this gas) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). Its therapeutical effects for people suffering from arthritis, rheumatism, skin diseases, and neurological problems are esteemed since antiquity.

The sea front of Methana is quite empty in off-season and as night falls you can have a delicious traditional dish in one of the small tavernas.
