The Propylaea, the monumental gateway of the acropolis, was designed by the architect Mnesikles and constructed in 437-432 BC. It comprises a central building and two lateral wings. It was deliberately constructed in such a way to fulfill the visitor with awe, given the majestic grandeur even of the entry before coming to the actual temples of the acropolis.
